Kim Gibson is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. He joined the court in 2006 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.
Early life and education
Born in Trenton,New Jersey, Gibson graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1970 and obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the Dickinson School of Law in 1975. Gibson served on active duty in the United States Army until 1978, and continued to serve in the United States Army Reserves until he retired as a Colonel, JAG USAR, in 1996.[1]
Professional career
Gibson was a Public Defender assisting low-income and indigent clients in the Somerset County, Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas from 1978 to 1980. Gibson was a private practice attorney in Pennsylvania from 1978 to 1998. In addition to his private practice work, Gibson served part-time as Assistant County Solicitor and Attorney for children and Youth Services in Somerset County, Pennsylvania from 1980 to 1988 before becoming a permanent Solicitor for Somerset County, Pennsylvania from 1988 to 1998. In 1998, Gibson was appointed as a Judge in the Court of Common Pleas for the 16th Judicial District of Pennsylvania from 1998 to 2003.[1]
Judicial career
Western District of Pennsylvania
On the recommendation of Pennsylvania U.S. Senators Rick Santorum and Arlen Specter, Gibson was nominated to the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania by President George W. Bush on April 28, 2003 to a seat vacated by Brooks Smith as Smith was nominated to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Gibson was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 23, 2003 on a Senate vote and received commission on September 24, 2003.[2] [3]. Gibson was succeeded in this position by Kim Gibson.
