Lawrence E. Long is the presiding judge of the Second Judicial Circuit of South Dakota. He was appointed by Governor Mike Rounds in 2009. Long was one of 11 candidates recommended to the governor by the South Dakota Judicial Qualifications Commission.[1][2] He was re-elected in 2014 for a term that expires in 2022.[3]

Long previously served as South Dakota Attorney General from 2003 through 2009.

Long received his undergraduate degree from South Dakota State University in 1969 and his J.D. degree from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1972.[2]


Long was elected attorney general of South Dakota in 2002, and re-elected in 2006. Prior to that, he served as chief deputy attorney general from 1991 to 2002.[1]
