Lawton R. Nuss is the Chief Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court. He was appointed to the court by Republican Governor Bill Graves in August 2002, becoming the first Court member in more than 20 years to move directly from the bar to the bench. [1] His current term ends in 2016.
Term as Chief Justice
Nuss automatically took over the role of Chief Justice when Robert Davis retired from the court in August 2010. Nuss had been serving as interim chief justice since spring 2010. [2]
Education
Nuss received his B.A. in English and History from the University of Kansas in 1975. He graduated from the University of Kansas Law School in 1982.[1]
Military service
Since Nuss attended the University of Kansas on a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship, he entered the United States Marine Corps after receiving his B.A. After four years in service, he left and enrolled in law school.[1]
Professional career
After graduating from law school, Nuss joined the firm Clark Mize & Linville. He was appointed to the Kansas Supreme Court after twenty years in private practice.[1]
