Lee Roy West is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Lee West is currently a judge serving on senior status.
Early life and education
A native Oklahoman, West graduated from the University of Oklahoma with both his Bachelor's Degree in 1952 and his Juris Doctorate Degree in 1956. From 1952 to 1954, West was an active duty Marine Corps Lieutenant and served in reserved duty from 1954 to 1956. In 1963, West earned his Master of Laws Degree from Harvard.
West served as a Private Practice Attorney in the State of Oklahoma from 1956 to 1961, 1963 to 1965, and 1978 to 1979. West had experience as a professor, first starting out from 1961 to 1962 as a member of the Oklahoma Law School Faculty. From 1962 to 1963, West taught at Harvard and earned his Master's in Laws Degree by being a Ford Foundation fellow in law teaching. In 1965, West started his judicial career as he was appointed by the Oklahoma Judicial Nominating Commission as a District Court Judge for Oklahoma's 22nd Judicial District and in the same time frame served as special, reserve Justice in the Oklahoma Supreme Court and Court of Criminal Appeals, until 1973. In 1973, West became a full-time member of the Oklahoma Civil Aeronautics Board until 1978.

West was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on September 28, 1979 to a new judgeship created by 92 Stat. 1629 which was approved by Congress. West was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 31, 1979 on a Senate vote and received commission on November 2, 1979. West served as the Chief Judge handling administrative functions with the Clerk of Court from 1993 to 1994 before later assuming senior status on November 26, 1994. West was succeeded in this position by Vicki Miles-LaGrange.
