Leonie M. Brinkema is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Early Life and Education

Born in Teaneck, New Jersey, Brinkema graduated from Rutgers University with her Bachelor's Degree in 1966 and her Master's in Legal Studies in 1970 before earning her Juris Doctor degree from Cornell Law School in 1976.^[1]

Legal Career

Brinkema served as a Trial Attorney in the United States Department of Justice's Public Integrity Section of the Criminal Prosecutions Division from 1976 to 1977 before serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia U.S. Attorney's Office until 1983. Brinkema also served as a Trial Attorney in the United States Department of Justice's Office of International Affairs from 1983 to 1984. Brinkema entered private practice in Virginia briefly until 1985 and was also an instructor in the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy from 1984 to 1985.^[1]

Federal Judicial Career

Brinkema was appointed to serve as a Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in 1985.^[1]

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Chuck Robb, Brinkema was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia by President Bill Clinton on August 6, 1993 to a seat vacated by Albert Bryan Jr. as Bryan assumed senior status. Brinkema was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 18, 1993 on a Senate vote and received commission on October 20, 1993.^[2]
