Leonard Burke Sand is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. [1] He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter.
Early life and education
Sand graduated from the New York University School of Commerce with his Bachelor's degree in 1947 and later graduated from Harvard Law with his Bachelor of laws degree in 1951 and also served as a United States Naval Reserve Ensign from 1951 to 1953[1].
Professional career
Sand began his legal career as a law clerk for the US Department of Justice from 1952 to 1953 before becoming the Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1953 to 1954 and later became a private practice attorney in New York City from 1954 to 1956 before becoming Assistant to the United States Solicitor General from 1956 to 1959 before resuming private practice work from 1960 to 1978[1].
Judicial career

Sand was nominated by Jimmy Carter on April 7, 1978 to a seat vacated by Charles Metzner. Sand was confirmed by the Senate on May 17, 1978 and received commission on May 19, 1978. Sand later assumed senior status on July 1, 1993[1]. Sand was succeeded in this position by Barrington Parker.
