Leroy Roundtree Hassell, Sr. was a justice on the Supreme Court of Virginia. He was appointed to the Court by Democratic Governor Baliles in 1989 during a recess of the General Assembly and his term was set to expire on January 31, 2014. [1] However, Hassell died on February 9, 2011. [2]

Justice Hassell was the first black chief justice of the Virginia Supreme Court. [3] He was sworn in to that position on February 11, 2003, and stepped down as chief justice in 2010. [4]

Education

Hassell received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia in 1977 and his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1980. [5]

Career

Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Hassell was in private practice. In 1989, Governor Gerald Baliles appointed Hassell to the Virginia Supreme Court. The court's justices elected Hassell Chief Justice in 2002. [3]
