Lesley Brooks Wells is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. She joined the court in 1994 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. Wells is serving on senior status.
Early life and education
A native of Muskegon, MI, Wells graduated from Chatham College with her Bachelor's Degree in 1959 and later graduated with her juris doctor degree from Cleveland State University's Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1974. [1]
Professional career
Wells started out her legal career after law school as a Federal court intern for the Women's Law Fund from 1973 to 1974. In 1975 after graduating from law school, Wells went into Private practice in Cleveland until 1978. In 1979, Wells became Director of the ABAR III Civil Rights Litigation Support Center at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law until 1980. In 1980, Wells returned back into private practice in Cleveland and also during the same time served as a adjunct professor in the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law from 1980 to 1981 and also as a Adjunct assistant professor for the College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University from 1980 to 1983 and again from 1990 to 1992. In 1983, Wells was elected Judge for the Court of Common Pleas in Cuyahoga County until 1994 when she was appointed to the Federal Bench. [1]
Judicial career
Northern District of Ohio
On the unanimous recommendation of Senators Howard Metzenbaum and John Glenn, wells was nominated by President Bill Clinton on November 19, 1993 to a seat vacated by John Manos as Manos assumed senior status. Wells was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on February 10, 1994 on a senate vote and received commission on February 11, 1994. Wells assumed senior status on February 14, 2006. [1] Wells was succeeded in this position by Sara Lioi.
