Judicial career
Supreme Court of the United States
Powell was nominated to the Supreme Court by Richard M. Nixon on October 22, 1971, to a seat vacated by Hugo Black. He was confirmed by the Senate on December 6, 1971, and received commission on December 9, 1971. He assumed senior status on June 26, 1987 and served until his death on August 25, 1998.[1] He was succeeded to this post by Anthony Kennedy.
