Louisiana City Courts

There are 46 city courts in Louisiana. These courts generally have concurrent jurisdiction with the district court in civil cases involving $15,000 or less.^[1] The city courts have replaced some of the Justice of the Peace and Mayor's Courts.^[2] Judges serve six-year terms.^[3]
The jurisdiction of the city courts includes:

• Criminal cases such as city ordinance violations (not punishable by hard labor) and preliminary examinations of criminal cases
• Civil cases where the disputed amount is between $5,000 and $20,000 (except in tutorship, curatorship, emancipation, partition proceedings, and cases where parish courts have no jurisdiction)
• Juvenile cases (except in parishes with separate juvenile courts)

They may have a Small Claims division as well. ^[3]
