Lyonel Thomas Senter, Jr. is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Senter is a judge serving on senior status.

Early life and education

A native of Mississippi, Senter graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with his Bachelor's Degree in 1956 and later graduated from the University of Mississippi Law School with his Law Degree in 1959 along with continuing education at the National Judicial College at the University of Nevada-Reno. Legal career

Senter started out as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Mississippi from 1959 to 1968. In addition to his private practice work, Senter was a prosecuting attorney for Monroe County from 1960 to 1963 and also was a U.S. Court Commissioner for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi from 1966 to 1968. Senter also was a Circuit court judge for the First Judicial District of Mississippi from 1968 to 1979. [1]

Federal judicial career

Senter was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on October 11, 1979 to a seat vacated by Orma Smith. Senter was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 20, 1979 on a Senate vote and received commission on December 21, 1979. Senter served as the chief judge of the court from 1982 to 1998 before later assuming senior status on July 30, 1998. [1]
