Marvin R. Baxter is an associate justice on the seven member California Supreme Court. He was appointed to the court in the state's Commission-selection, political appointment method of judicial selection in January of 1991 by Governor George Deukmejian. He was retained a full twelve year term in 2002. His current term will end in 2014.[1]
Education
Baxter earned his undergraduate degree in Economics from California State University, Fresno in 1962. In 1966, he earned a Juris Doctor from Hastings College of Law.[1]
Professional career
Following his admission to the bar Baxter served as a Fresno County deputy district attorney from 1967 until 1969. Baxter then entered private practice at the firm Andrews, Andrews, Thaxter, Jones and Baxter, where he worked for 13 years. In 1983, Governor George Deukmejian selected Baxter as Appointments Secretary, a position he held for six years. In this capacity, he advised the governor on all executive and judicial appointments. He was appointed as an Associate Justice of the Fifth Appellate District of the California Court of Appeal in 1988. He was appointed to the California Supreme Court in 1991, a position which he still serves.[1]
