Mary Ellen Barbera is a Judge on the Maryland Court of Appeals, 7th Appellate Circuit (Montgomery County). She was appointed to the Court on August 7, 2008[1] and took office on September 2, 2008.[2]

Education

Judge Barbera is a graduate of Towson State College, cum laude, 1975. She worked as a teacher in the Baltimore City Public School System from 1975-84 before earning her Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1984.[2]

Legal career

Judge Barbera served as a judge for the Court of Special Appeals, at Large, between January 4, 2002 and September 2, 2008. She has chaired the Criminal Law and Procedure Committee, 2006- (member, 2002-), and is a member of the Judicial Ethics Committee, 2007-, Maryland Judicial Conference.

Judge Barbera was a law clerk to Judge Robert L. Karwacki, Court of Special Appeals from 1984-85. She served as an Assistant Attorney General, 1985-89, and Deputy Chief, Criminal Appeals Division, 1989-98, in the Office of the Attorney General. She was Legal Counsel in the Office of the Governor, 1999-2002 (and was deputy legal counsel from 1998-99).[2]
