Early life and education
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, McLaughlin graduated from Gwynedd-Mercy College with her Bachelor's Degree in 1968 and from Bryn Mawr College with her Master's Degree in 1969. McLaughlin went on to obtain her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1976.[2]
Professional career
McLaughlin was a law clerk to federal judge Stanley Brotman for the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey from 1976 to 1977. McLaughlin was in private practice from 1977 to 1980, before becoming Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia from 1980 to 1984. McLaughlin was an Assistant Professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Law from 1984-1986 before practicing in Pennsylvania from 1986 to 2000. McLaughlin also served as an Adjunct Professor for the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1988 and for the Rutgers University School of Law in 1989. McLaughlin was Chief Counsel for the Sub-committee on Terrorism, Technology, and Government for the Senate Judiciary Committee in 1995.[2]
Judicial career
Eastern District of Pennsylvania
McLaughlin was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania by President Bill Clinton on March 9, 2000 to a seat vacated by Marvin Katz as Katz assumed senior status. McLaughlin was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 24, 2000 on a Senate vote and received commission on May 31, 2000. [3]
Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court
McLaughlin also concurrently serves on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. She was appointed on May 18, 2008 and her term will end on May 18, 2015.[4]
