Mary M. Schroeder is a Federal Appeals Judge with the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco.

Early Life and Education

Schroeder graduated from Swarthmore with her Bachelor's Degree in 1962 her Juris Doctor, J.D. degree from the Chicago Law in 1965.

Legal Career

Schroeder was a Trial Attorney in the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, DC from 1965 to 1969. From 1969 to 1970, Schroeder served as a law clerk to former State Supreme Court justice Jesse A. Udall in the Arizona Supreme Court. Schroeder was a private practice attorney in Arizona from 1971 to 1975 and also worked as a visiting Instructor at Arizona State University Law School from 1975 to 1978. Schroeder was a Judge in the Arizona Court of Appeals in Division One in Phoenix from 1975 to 1979. In 1995, Schroeder was a visiting Lecturer at Duke University.

Federal Judicial Career

Schroeder was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit by Jimmy Carter on May 3, 1979 to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629, which was approved by Congress. Schroeder was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 25, 1979 on a Senate vote and received commission on September 26, 1979. Schroeder served as the Chief Judge of the Court from 2000 to 2007.
