Maryland judicial elections

Judges in Maryland are participate in retention elections or non-partisan elections, depending on the level of court.

Judicial elections are only held in even-numbered years.

Primary election

Trial court judges compete in a partisan primary.

  • If a Circuit Court candidate wins the Democratic and Republican primary, she or he runs unopposed in the general election.

General election

Appellate judges stand for retention in the general election. Trial court judge candidates advance from the primary.

Retention election - 10 year terms Non-partisan election of judges - 15 year terms

Results

Appellate and Circuit Court results are posted on the Maryland Board of Elections website. Orphans' Courts results can be found on the county election websites.
