Maureen McKenna Goldberg (b. 1951) is the chief justice on the Rhode Island Supreme Court. Republican Governor Lincoln Almond appointed Judge Goldberg to the Rhode Island Supreme Court. The justices of the Rhode Island Supreme Court hold office for life.[1] According to the Rhode Island Supreme Court website, her seat is currently vacant.[2]
Legal education
Maureen McKenna Goldberg is a 1978 graduate of Suffolk University Law School in Boston. Previously she graduated from St. Mary's Academy, Bay View, in 1969 and Providence College in 1973.[3]
Legal career
Goldberg was an Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Division from 1978 to 1984. She served as South Kingstown Town Solicitor from 1985 to 1987 and Westerly Town Solicitor from 1987 to 1990. In 1990, she served as Westerly Acting Town Manager. Also in 1990, she was appointed an Associate Justice for Rhode Island Superior Court, serving from July of 1990 to May of 1997 before Governor Lincoln Almond appointed her to the Rhode Island Supreme Court.[3]
Awards and associations
Justice Goldberg is a member of the American Bar Association, the Rhode Island Bar Association, the Rhode Island Bar Foundation, the Rhode Island Women's Bar Association, the National Association of Women Judges, the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Pawtucket Bar Association, and is on the Board of Directors at The Rhode Island Foundation, on the Board of Trustees at St. Mary Academy-Bay View. Most recently, Justice Goldberg has been on the Suffolk Law School Dean's Advisory Committee from 2004-2005.[4]
Personal Life
Justice Goldberg is married to Bob Goldberg, a prominent Rhode Island lobbyist. According to the Providence Journal, Bob Goldberg earned just over $800,000 last year in lobbying fees, from such clients as GTECH, Twin River, UnitedHealth Group and Deepwater Wind. He is close to House Speaker William J. Murphy, who will have a prominent say in the selection of the next chief justice and who recognized Bob Goldberg at the speaker’s St. Patrick’s Day luncheon as one of Rhode Island’s pre-eminent lobbyists.[5]
