W. Michael Gillette has been an associate justice of the Oregon Supreme Court since 1986. He is currently the justice with the most seniority on the bench. Former Oregon Governor Victor Atiyeh, a Republican, appointed him to fill the vacancy created when Justice Betty Roberts left the bench. He was then retained by voters in 1986, 1992, 1998, and 2004. His current term ends on January 1, 2011, [1][2] and he is not running for another term. [3]

Biography

Justice Gillette graduated from Whitman College in 1963 and from Harvard Law School in 1966.[1]

Legal career

Justice Gillette began his legal career in 1966 as a lawyer with the firm Rives and Rogers. The following year, he became a Deputy District Attorney in Multnomah County. In 1969, he became an Assistant Attorney General in Oregon and American Samoa. He then organized, directed, and worked as Chief Counsel of the Consumer Protection Division from 1971 to 1973. He worked as Chief Trial Counsel for the Oregon Department of Justice for less than a year before becoming the Solicitor General of Oregon. He worked in this capacity until 1977, when he joined the Court of Appeals. He was then elevated to the Supreme Court in 1986.[1]
