The Milwaukee County Circuit Court is the largest county court in the state of Wisconsin. The court consists of 47 branches. Two branches were recently vacant, but were filled by the election that took place on April 7, 2009. Ellen Brostrom was elected to Branch 6 and J.D. Watts was elected to Branch 15. They will begin their terms as of August 1, 2009, unless they are appointed by the Governor before then to serve the remainder of the current term.[1]

Divisions

The work of the court is done in five separate divisions: felony, misdemeanor/traffic, civil (including probate and small claims), family and children's. Judges rotate from one division to another every three to four years; about one-quarter of the judges rotate each year.[2]

Currently, 13 judges are assigned to the felony division, 8 to the misdemeanor division, 12 to the civil division, 6 to the family division and 8 to the children's division.[3]

Much of the court's work is done with the help of 21 court commissioners, appointed by the court, who handle preliminary and uncontested matters and make other important decisions subject to the review of circuit court judges.[4]
