Morgan Christen joined the Alaska Supreme Court an associate justice on April 5, 2009. She was appointed to this position by Sarah Palin to fill the position made vacant by the retirement of Warren Matthews. Judge Christen will be subject to a retention election in 2012.

Christen will be the second woman to serve on the Alaska Supreme Court. [1]

Applicant survey

The Alaska Judicial Council performs a bar poll of all applicants for Supreme Court justice positions by interviewing Alaskan attorneys about various qualities of the applicants. "Applicants are rated on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest rating and a rating of 3 being 'acceptable.'" [2]

Biographical information

Judge Christen has lived in Alaska for over 22 years. She has been practicing law for 22 years. She graduated from Golden Gate University School of Law in 1986. Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court Christen was the presiding judge of the Third Judicial District Superior Court. [3]

Appointment process

Two nominees, Christen and Eric Smith, were selected by the Alaska Judicial Council out of a pool of six applicants for the position. Palin said of her selection of Christen, "I have every confidence that Judge Christen has the experience, intellect, wisdom and character to be an outstanding Supreme Court justice."
