Cheshire County, NH Judicial vacancies and the upcoming retirement of Judge John P. Arnold from the New Hampshire Superior Court have resulted in increased delays for trials and hearings for numerous counties in NH, including Cheshire County. The state has currently capped the superior court judges to 18, with 11 of 59 full-time judicial positions vacant. The impending vacancy created by Arnold's retirement could take up to four months to fill and lawyers and citizens in the state are beginning to worry about mounting caseloads. Kathleen O’Donnell, an attorney who practices family law in Keene, told the press, “If you file (for a divorce) today you probably aren’t going to get a hearing date for six months." In the meantime, as Gov. John Lynch considers an appointment to the post, citizens will have to continue to wait for court services.
