NM Representative proposes bill to rename state federal courthouse

Las Cruces, NM New Mexico Representative Steve Pearce has proposed legislation in the United State Congress to change the name of the Federal courthouse in Las Cruces, NM to the "Judge Edwin L. Mechem Federal Courthouse". The courthouse serves the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico, where Edwin Mechem served from October 14, 1970 until his death on November 27, 2002. Pearce commented on the proposed legislation, stating "Edwin Mechem is an iconic and prolific leader, whose legacy should live on in the state of New Mexico. His service to our state as a United States Senator, Governor, and Federal Judge deserves recognition. I am proud to introduce this legislation to honor his memory." The bill, H.R. 3742, will need to pass both the House and Senate and be signed by the President before going into effect.
