Nelva Gonzales Ramos confirmed as a federal judge
Texas: Former 347th District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos is officially Texas's newest federal judge. The senate unanimously confirmed her appointment to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas early last week. After receiving word last Thursday that the paperwork had been signed by President Obama, Ramos was officially sworn in at the Federal Courthouse in Corpus Christi.
Judge Ramos waited seven months to officially take office after being nominated by President Obama in January. Ramos was nominated to the Southern District bench to replace the recently retired Hayden Head, who is now on senior status.
Ramos worked as both a city judge and a private attorney before taking the 347th District Court bench in 2001. Governor Perry will appoint a replacement to serve the remainder of Ramos' term on the district court, which ends in 2012. In the meantime other judges will take on cases that would be assigned to the position.
