Norma Shapiro is a federal judge on senior status for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. She joined the court in 1978 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter.
Early life and education
A native of Pennsylania, Shapiro graduated from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor with her Bachelor's Degree in 1948 and later graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School with her Juris Doctorate Degree in 1951.[1]
Professional career
Shapiro became a Law Clerk for former State Supreme Court Justice Horace Stern in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court from 1951-1952 before becoming a Gowen fellow in criminal law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School from 1954 to 1955. Then Shapiro spent the rest of her pre-judicial legal career as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Pennsylvania from 1956 to 1978. Shapiro, also was a part-time Faculty Member of the University of Pennsylvania Law School from 1951 to 1952, 1955 to 1956 and in 1971.
Judicial career
Eastern District of Pennsylvania
Shapiro was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on August 1, 1978 to a seat vacated by James Gorbey as Gorbey died while in Judicial Service[2]. Shapiro was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 11, 1978 on a Senate vote and received commission on August 11, 1978. Shapiro later assumed senior status on December 31, 1998. Shapiro was succeeded in this position by Cynthia Rufe.
