On October 5, 2011 President Obama nominated Patty Shwartz to a post on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, filling the spot vacated by Maryanne Barry upon her retirement.[3] Obama commented on the nomination, stating, "Judge Shwartz has a long and impressive record of service and a history of handing down fair and judicious decisions. She will be a thoughtful and distinguished addition to the 3rd circuit and I am extremely pleased to put her forward.”[5]
Shwartz was rated Unanimously Well Qualified by the American Bar Association. Shwartz's nomination was returned to the president on January 3, 2013. The nomination was resubmitted on January 4, 2013. [6]
On April 9, 2013, the United States Senate confirmed Patty Shwartz to an Article III post for the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit with vote of 64-34.[7][8]
Early life and education
Judge Shwartz earned her B.A. degree from Rutgers College in 1983 and her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1986.[1][2]
Professional career
Judge Shwartz began her career as a private practice lawyer in Philadelphia. A short time later, she became a clerk for U.S. District Judge Harold Ackerman in New Jersey. She then joined the United States Attorney’s Office. She became the Chief of the Criminal Division of this office and held this position until she became a magistrate judge in 2003.[1][2]
