Paul W. Green (b. 1952) is a Justice on the Texas Supreme Court. He was elected to that court in November 2004 and began his term on January 1, 2005. His current term ends on December 31, 2010. Justice Green is a Republican.
Legal education
Green graduated from the University of Texas and received his J.D. from St. Mary's University School of Law in San Antonio.[1]
Legal experience
Prior to joining the Court, Green was a Justice on one of the Texas Courts of Appeals, the Fourth Court of Appeals of Texas, in San Antonio.[2]
2004 election
Green won the Republican nomination to his seat on the Court in a contested primary against then-Justice Steven Wayne Smith. Smith, though a new member of the Court at the time, was opposed by Texas Governor Rick Perry. Senator John Cornyn, a former Texas Supreme Court Justice himself for seven years, also supported Green over Smith. Smith then sought to get re-elected to the Court in 2006 by entering the primary contest against recent Perry appointee Don Willett, but Willett won the contested vote by a single percentage point.
