Paul Martin Newby is an Associate Justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court. He was elected in 2004 in a non-partisan election to an eight-year term that expires in 2012. Newby is considered to be a conservative.

Legal education

Justice Newby attended Duke University, earning a B.A. in Public Policy Studies. He earned his law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law.[1]

Legal experience

Justice Newby began his law practice in Asheville with Van Winkle, Buck, Wall, Starnes and Davis, was Vice President and General Counsel of Cannon Mills Realty and Development Corporation. In 1985 Justice Newby was appointed as Assistance U.S. Attorney, where he served until 2004. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Campbell University School of Law and is the Vice President of the North Carolina Bar Association.[2]
