Peter Thorp Fay is a federal judge with the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He was assigned to the Eleventh Circuit in 1981, after having served on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals at the nomination of President Gerald Ford. Fay is serving on senior status.
Early life and education
A native of Florida, Fay graduated from Rollins College with his Bachelor's Degree in 1951 and later graduated from the University of Florida College of Law with his Juris Doctorate Degree in 1956. Fay also served as a U.S. Air Force Lieutenant from 1951 to 1953. [1]
Professional career
Fay served his entire pre-judicial legal career as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Florida from 1956 to 1970. [1]
Judicial career
Southern District of Florida
Fay was nominated by President Richard Nixon on October 7, 1970, to a new seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida created by 84 Stat. 294 which was approved by Congress. Fay was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 13, 1970 on a senate vote and received commission on October 16, 1970. Fay left the Southern District of Florida on October 8, 1976, due to his appointment to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. [1] Fay was succeeded in this position by William Hoeveler.
Fifth Circuit
Fay was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit by President Gerald Ford on June 11, 1976 to a seat vacated by David Dyer. Fay was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 17, 1976 on a senate vote and received commission on September 21, 1976. Fay left the Fifth Circuit on October 1, 1981 due to new legislation creating the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. [1]
Eleventh Circuit
Fay was re-assigned to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals on October 1, 1981, as part of legislation signed into law that reorganized the Fifth Circuit. Fay assumed senior status on January 19, 1994. [1]
