Raymond Joseph Dearie (b. 1944) is a federal judge serving on senior status for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. He joined the court in 1986 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. He assumed senior status on April 3, 2011. He was chief justice of the court from 2007-2011.

Early life and education

Dearie graduated from Fairfield with his Bachelor's Degree in 1966 and later graduated from St. Johns-New York Law with his J.D. Degree in 1969. [1]

Professional career

Dearie began his legal career as a private practice attorney in New York City from 1969 to 1971 before having a six year stint with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York from 1971 to 1977. While with the US Attorney's Office, Dearie served as the Chief of the Appeals Division representing the Eastern District of New York in all civil manners from 1971 to 1974 Before being the Chief Prosecutor of the General Crimes Section from 1974 to 1976 and served as the Chief Federal Prosecutor of the Criminal Division from 1976 to 1977 before serving as Executive assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York in 1977. Dearie resumed private practice work from 1977 to 1980 before rejoining the US Attorney's Office as Chief assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York from 1980 to 1982 before being nominated by President Ronald Reagan as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York from 1982 to 1986. Judicial career

Eastern District of New York

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Al D'Amato, Dearie was nominated to the court by President Ronald Reagan on February 3, 1986 to a new seat authorized by 98 Stat. 333. The U.S. Senate confirmed him on March 14, 1986 and he was commissioned on March 19, 1986. Dearie was made chief judge of the court in 2007 and assumed senior status in 2011. [1].
