Chief Justice recommendations
In 2009, the Commission reviewed candidates for the post of Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court due to the announced retirement of Justice Frank Williams. They submitted a list to Governor Carcieri, who nominated Paul Suttell. Suttell was approved by the Senate, and took the oath of office on July 16, 2009. [1]
2009 vacancy
The promotion of Paul Suttell to chief justice created an open seat on the court. The Commission is interviewed applicants in order to make a recommendation to the Governor. [2] The applicants are:
- Superior Court Associate Justice Judith Colenback Savage
- Superior Court Associate Justice Gilbert V. Indeglia
- Family Court Associate Justice Laureen D’Ambra
- Attorney John A. MacFadyen
- Attorney Samuel D. Zurier
- Attorney Sandra A. Lanni [3]
Interviews were held on November 10, 2009 and there were be public hearings on November 17, 2009.
Transparency question
The Providence Journal have instigated an inquiry into the nomination committee's level of transparency to the public. The commission believes that letters of recommendation of judicial nominees are exempt from the Access to Public Records Act. The newspaper is looking for outside confirmation of that notion. [4]
