McConnell nominated to U.S. District Court of Rhode Island
Washington, D.C. Rhode Island lawyer John "Jack" J. McConnell Jr. was nominated by President Obama to the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island. McConnell was recommended by Rhode Island Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse. He currently practices with the law firm Motley Rice LLC.[1]
Carcieri makes Supreme Court nomination
Rhode Island: Governor Carcieri has nominated Superior Court judge Gilbert V. Indeglia for a lifetime term on the Rhode Island Supreme Court. Indeglia was one of five applicants for the seat reviewed by the state Judicial Nominating Commission. The nomination is still subject to confirmation from the Rhode Island Legislature.
Carcieri said of the nomination: "For the past 20 years, Justice Indeglia has rightfully earned a reputation for being one of the most conscientious, compassionate and consistent jurists to have served on the bench. His reputation on the bench is matched by his reputation in his community and he is considered a great civic leader, lending his time and energy to his community. His experience, intellect, respect for our legal system and his personal character will serve him well as an associate justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court." [1]
Two new nominees for the federal courts announced
New York and Rhode Island: President Obama announced the nomination of two judges for the federal courts: Denny Chin for the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and O. Rogeriee Thompson for the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. [1]
Denny Chin was born in Kowloon, Hong Kong. He graduated from Princeton with his Bachelor's degree in 1975 and from Fordham University School of Law with his Juris Doctor degree in 1978. On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Moynihan, Chin was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York by President Bill Clinton on March 24, 1994, where he currently serves. O. Rogeriee Thompson was recommended to the President by Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, who called her "highly qualified". [3] She received an A.B. in 1973 from Brown University, and a J.D. in 1976 from Boston University School of Law. If confirmed by the Senate, Thompson would be the first black judge to serve the First District. [4]

New chief justice sworn in
Rhode Island: Justice Paul Suttell was sworn in as the chief justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court on July 16, 2009. Suttell is filling the post left open by the retirement of Frank Williams at the end of 2008, and is taking the reins from interim acting chief justice Maureen McKenna Goldberg.
In 2003, Republican Governor Donald Carcieri appointed Suttell to the Supreme Court, [1] and in 2009, Carcieri nominated Suttell for the post of chief justice. Suttell was approved as chief justice by the Senate 37 - 0. [2] [3]
