Richard Henry Mills is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois. He joined the court in 1985 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. He is serving on senior status.

Early life

A native of Illinois, Mills graduated from Bradley University with his Bachelor's Degree in 1970 and his law degree from Northwestern in 1973.

Legal career

Mills started his legal career as an Assistant State's Attorney for the Sangamon County from 1973 to 1978. In 1978, Mills went into private practice before serving a nine year stint as a Associate Circuit Court Judge in the 7th Judicial Circuit of Illinois from 1979 to 1988. In 1988, the people of Illinois elected him to serve as a Circuit Court Judge in the Seventh Judicial District and served four terms until 1998.

Federal judicial career

On the recommendation of Senator Carol Mosley Braun, Mills was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on April 2, 1998 to a seat vacated by J. Waldo Ackerman. Mills was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 21, 1998 on a Senate Vote and received commission on October 22, 1998.
