Richard W. Sabers (born February 12, 1938 in Salem, South Dakota) is a former associate justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court. He retired in 2009.

Sabers was appointed to the state's highest court in 1986 by Republican Governor Bill Janklow, representing the state's Second Supreme Court District. He was retained on the court by voters in 1990, 1998 and 2006. [1] [2] [3]

Sabers was succeeded on the court by Glen A. Severson. [4]

Legal background

Sabers graduated from St. John's University of Collegeville, Minnesota in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts, then served two years as a lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers for the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany. Following his service, he attended law school at the University of South Dakota.

After earning his law degree, Sabers was in private practice as a trial attorney for nearly twenty years in Sioux Falls. He was a partner with the law firm of Moore, Rasmussen, Sabers and Kading when he was appointed to the state's high court in 1986. [5]

Awards and associations

  • Sabers was President of the Second Judicial Circuit Bar from 1982-1983.
  • He was awarded the Fred J Nichol award for outstanding South Dakota Jurist in 2007 by the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association
  • The University of South Dakota School of Law presented Sabers an award in 2008 for 22 years of public service.
  • He was also presented the McKusick Award in 2008, which is jointly bestowed by the University of South Dakota Law School and the State Bar of South Dakota.
  • The South Dakota Law Review gave Sabers an award for distinguished service in 2008. [5]

Personal

Sabers is married to Ellie Schmitz. He was formerly married to Colleen Sabers, now deceased, with whom he had three children. [5]
