Richard Schell is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. He joined the court in 1988 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.[1]
Early life and education
A native Texan, Schell graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas with his Bachelor's Degree in 1972 and with his juris doctorate degree in 1975.[1]
Professional career
After law school, Schell was a full fledged law Instructor at the Southern Methodist University Law School from 1975 to 1976. In 1976, Schell became Assistant district attorney for Collin County before serving five years in private practice licensed in the State of Texas from 1977 to 1982. In 1982, Schell became a Judge as the County Cour Judge for Collin County until 1986 when he served as a district court judge for the 219th Judicial District Court of Texas based in Collin County until his appointment to the Federal Bench in 1988.[1]
Judicial career
Eastern District of Texas
On the recommendation of Texas U.S. Senator Phil Gramm, Schell was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on April 13, 1988 to a seat vacated by William Steger as Steger assumed senior status. Schell was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 27, 1988 on a Senate vote and received commission on June 6, 1988. Schell served as the chief judge of the court from 1994 to 2001.[1]
