Rives Kistler

Rives Kistler is an Associate Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court. He was appointed to the court in August 2003 by Democratic Gov. Ted Kulongoski.[1] After his initial appointment, Kistler was elected to his seat on the court on May 18, 2004[2] with 60% of the vote. His current term expires on January 1, 2011.[3]

Biography

Justice Kistler received his law degree in 1981 from the Georgetown University Law Center. He is one of only two openly LGBT state Supreme Court justices in the United States, the other being fellow Oregon Supreme Court Justice Virginia Linder, who was elected in November 2006. [1]

Legal career

Justice Kistler began his legal career as a law clerk for Charles Clark of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and then for Lewis Powell of the U.S. Supreme Court. He joined the law firm Stoel Rives LLP in 1983. He then worked as an Oregon Assistant Attorney General until 1999, when he joined the Court of Appeals. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2003.[1]
