Robert Bryan Harwell is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. He joined the court in 2004 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.
Early life and education
Harwell graduated from Clemson with his Bachelor's degree in 1980 and later graduated from South Carolina Law with his Juris Doctor degree in 1982. Harwell served in the South Carolina Army National Guard on reserve duty from 1987 to 1992[1].
Professional career
Harwell began his legal career with two stints as a law clerk, first for Rodney Peeples in the State of South Carolina Judicial Department in 1983 and for Federal District judge Ross Anderson, Jr. for the District of South Carolina from 1983 to 1984 before spending the rest of his pre-judicial legal career as a private practice attorney licensed in South Carolina from 1984 to 2004[1].
Judicial career

On the recommendation of U.S. Senators Jim DeMint and Lindsey Graham, Harwell was nominated by President George W. Bush on January 20, 2004 to a seat vacated by Weston Houck as Houck assumed senior status. Harwell was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 24, 2004 on a majority voice vote and received commission on June 26, 2004[2].
