Robert Holmes Bell is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan. He joined the court in 1987 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.
Early life and education
Born in Michigan's State Capital of Lansing, Bell graduated from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois with a Bachelor's degree in 1966 and from Wayne State University Law School with his Juris Doctor degree in 1969.[1]
Professional career
Bell was an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Ingham County, Michigan from 1969 to 1973 before becoming a Judge in the Ingham District Court from 1973 to 1979. Bell was appointed to serve as Judge of the Circuit Court Ingham County, Michigan from 1979 to 1987.[1]
Judicial career
Western District of Michigan
Bell was nominated to the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan by President Ronald Reagan on March 11, 1987 to a seat vacated by Wendell Miles as Miles assumed senior status. Bell was confirmed by the Senate on July 1, 1987 on a Senate vote and received commission on July 2, 1987. [2] Bell served as the Chief Judge of the Court from 2001 to 2008.[1]
