Roberto Rivera-Soto was a justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. He was appointed to the court by Jim McGreevey, a Democratic governor, on April 20, 2004 and took office on September 1, 2004.[1] His last term expired in August 31, 2011. [2] [3]
In January 2011, Rivera-Soto announced that he would not seek renomination at the end of his current term. In his resignation letter, Rivera-Soto said that he did not wish to return to the court. [4]
Biography
Rivera-Soto was born in New York City and grew up in Puerto Rico. He received his undergraduate degree Haverford College in 1974 and his J.D. in 1977 from Cornell University School of Law.[5]
Legal career
Justice Rivera-Soto interned at the Office of the District Attorney of Delaware County, Pennsylvania in 1977. From 1978 to 1980, he worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He then worked for Fox Rothschild as a litigation associate until 1983. He then worked as senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of Caesars World, Inc. and as vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of Greate Bay Hotel and Casino, Inc. before returning to Fox Rothschild LLP as a partner. He was then appointed to the Supreme Court in 2004.[1]
Ethics violation
In 2007, the New Jersey Supreme Court voted 5-0 to censure Rivera-Soto for "creating an appearance of impropriety" after using his position to attempt to resolve a personal matter. The action came after the state's Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct recommended the rebuke. [6]
