Ronald Leighton is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. He joined the court in 2002 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.
Early life and education
A native of California, Leighton graduated from Whitworth College with his Bachelor's Degree in 1973 and later graduated from the University of California-Hastings College of Law with his juris doctorate degree in 1976.
Legal career
Leighton spent his entire pre-judicial legal career as a private practice attorney licensed int he State of Washington from 1976 to 2002.
Federal judicial career
Leighton was nominated by President George W. Bush on January 23, 2002 to a seat vacated by Robert Bryan. Leighton was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 14, 2002 on a majority voice vote and received commission on November 26, 2002[1].
Notable cases

Family PAC v. Washington Public Disclosure Commission
Judge Leighton on October 27, 2009, ruled against Washington Family PAC in a lawsuit challenging Washington State's $5,000 in 21 days rule. The group sued the Washington Public Disclosure commission over the law that prohibits large contributions over $5,000 in the last three weeks of the election. The judge ruled that it was not in the court's best interests to change the rules of the game at the last minute[2].
