Rose Vela is a judge on the Texas Thirteenth District Court of Appeals. She was elected to this position on November 7, 2006[1][2] and her current term ends on December 31, 2012.[3]
Education
Vela received her B.A. degree (major in English, minor in Political Science) from Southwest Texas State University in 1985 and her J.D. degree from St. Mary's University School of Law in 1988.[1]
Legal career
After law school, Justice Vela began her legal career as a briefing attorney for the Fourth Court of Appeals. A year later, in 1990, she moved to Corpus Christi and worked for two years as a briefing attorney for the Thirteenth Court of Appeals. She was elected to the 148th District Court of Nueces County in 1998. She served two terms on this court and was elected to the Thirteenth Court of Appeals in 2006. [1] Vela was the first Republican ever elected to the Thirteenth District. [4]
Elections
2012 election
Vela was to compete against incumbent Rogelio Valdez for the position of chief justice in the November 6, 2012 general election, but she formally withdrew her bid for chief justice in August of 2012.[5]

2010 Supreme Court bid

Vela was defeated by Eva Guzman in the Republican primary election, receiving only 37% of the vote. [6]
"Texans deserve a fair and impartial legal system that is representative of Texas. But most importantly, we need judges who will ensure that our courts follow the law and not try to rewrite it to satisfy their own personal agendas," Vela said. [7]
