Russell Evans Smith (1908-1990) was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Montana.
Smith was nominated by President Lyndon Johnson on February 16, 1966, to a seat vacated by William Murray; he was confirmed by the Senate on March 25, 1966, and received commission the next day. From 1968-1978, he served as the chief judge. He assumed senior status on May 12, 1979. He served the District of Montana until his death on March 29, 1990[1]. Smith was succeeded in this position by Paul Hatfield.
