Rya Zobel

Rya Zobel is a federal judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. She joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter.

Early life and education

Zobel was born in Zwickau, Germany and graduated from Radcliffe College with her Bachelor's Degree in 1953. Zobel received her Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School in 1956.[1]

Legal career

Zobel was a law clerk to former federal judge, George Sweeney of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts from 1956 to 1966. Zobel was a private practice attorney in the State of Massachusetts from 1967 to 1979.[1]

From 1995 to 1999, Zobel served as the Director of the Federal Judicial Center.[1]

Federal judicial career

Zobel was nominated to the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts by President Jimmy Carter on January 25, 1979 to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629, which was approved by Congress. Zobel was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 21, 1979 on a Senate vote and received commission on March 23, 1979.[1]
