Samuel Ray Cummings is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas. He joined the court in 1987, after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.[1] Cummings plans to transition to senior status on January 15, 2014.[2]

Early life and education

Born in Lubbock, Texas, Cummings graduated from Texas Tech University with his bachelor's in Business Administration in 1967 and graduated from Baylor University School of Law with his Juris Doctor degree in 1970.[1]

Professional career

Cummings spent his pre-judicial legal career as a private practice attorney in the State of Texas from 1970 to 1987.[1]

Judicial career

Northern District of Texas

On the recommendation of Texas U.S. Senator Phil Gramm, Cummings was nominated to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas by President Ronald Reagan on July 31, 1987, to a seat vacated by Halbert Woodward. Cummings was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 8, 1987, on a voice vote and received commission on December 9, 1987.[3]
