Samuel M. Blatchford (1820-1893) was an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Circuit Courts for the Second Circuit, and the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He joined the Supreme Court in 1882 after an appointment from Chester Arthur. He joined the Second Circuit in 1878 after an appointment from Rutherford B. Hayes. He began his judicial career in the Southern District of New York after an appointment from Andrew Johnson. He served on the Supreme Court until his death on July 7, 1893.[1]

Judicial career

Supreme Court

Blatchford was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Chester Arthur on March 13, 1882. He was confirmed by the Senate on March 22, 1882, and received commission that same day. He served until his death on July 7, 1893.[1] He was succeeded to this post by Edward Douglass White.

Second Circuit

Blatchford was nominated to the Second Circuit by President Rutherford B. Hayes on February 15, 1878 to fill the vacancy left by Alexander Smith Johnson. He was confirmed by the Senate on March 4, 1878, and received commission that same day. He served on this court until March 22, 1882. He was succeeded by William James Wallace.[1]

Southern District of New York

Blatchford received a recess appointment to the Southern District of New York from President Andrew Johnson on May 3, 1867. On July 13, 1867, he was officially nominated. He was confirmed by the Senate on July 16, 1867, and received commission that same day. He served on this court until March 4, 1878.[1] He was succeeded to this post by William Gardner Choate.
