Sandra Shank Beckwith is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. She joined the court in 1992 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. Beckwith is the court's former Chief Judge, now serving on senior status.
Early life and education
A native of Virginia, Beckwith graduated from the University of Cincinnati with her Bachelor's Degree in 1965 and her J.D. in 1968. [1]
Professional career
Beckwith has had a long and distinguished legal career as she started out as a private practice attorney in Harrison, OH from 1969 to 1977. In 1977, Beckwith was elected as a Municipal Court Judge in Hamilton County from 1977 to 1979. In 1979, Beckwith returned to private practice in Harrison, OH until in 1982, Beckwith was elected again as a Municipal Court Judge in Hamilton County a post she served until 1987. In 1987, Beckwith was elected as a Court of Common Pleas Judge in Hamilton County for two years before retuning back to private practice in Cincinnati from 1989 to 1992 and whole at the same time being elected as a County Commissioner in Hamilton County before being appointed to the federal bench. Beckwith was nominated by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1991 to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089,[2] which was approved by Congress. Beckwith was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on February 6, 1992 on a Senate Vote and received commission on February 10, 1992. [3]
