Sarah Parker (b. 1942) is the Chief Justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court, a position she has held since February 1, 2006. She was first elected in 1992 in a non-partisan election, and then again in 1996 and 2004. Her current term expires in 2014. Democratic Governor Mike Easley appointed Justice Parker to the court in 2006.

Legal education

Justice Sarah Parker graduated from Garinger High School, Charlotte, 1960, attended Meredith College, 1960-1962 and graduated with a B.A. from UNC-Chapel Hill, 1964. Parker earned her J.D. from UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law, 1969 and attended the Institute of Judicial Administration Appellate Judges Seminar, 1987.[1]

Legal experience

Justice Sarah Parker began working after college in the U.S. Peace Corps in Ankara Turkey from 1964-1966. After law school, she was an attorney in private practice from 1969-1984. On December 28, 1984, Parker was appointed to the North Carolina Court of Appeals, where she was elected on November 4, 1986 and re-elected on November 6, 1990. She became an Associate Justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court in 1993, where she was re-elected on November 5, 1996 and November 2, 2004. On February 1, 2006, Justice Parker was made Chief Justice of the court, where she continues to be to the present.[2]
