Scott A. Brister was Justice of the Texas Supreme Court from November 21, 2003 to September 7, 2009. [1] when he was appointed by Governor Rick Perry to serve the remainder of departing Justice Craig T. Enoch's term. He was elected to a six-year term in November 2, 2004[2]. His current term would end on December 31, 2010, however, Brister announced that he would leave the court effective September 7, 2009, in order to return to private practice. [3][4][5] His replacement was Eva Guzman. [6]

Justice Brister is a Republican.[7]

Legal education

Brister is a native of Waco, Texas. He is a graduate of Duke University and Harvard Law School.[8]

Legal experience

In 1989, Justice Scott Brister was appointed to the 234th District Court in Harris County, where he remained until 1998. From 1998 to 1999, he was the civil administrative judge for the Harris County district court, and in 2000, he was elected to the First Court of Appeals. In 2001, Governor Perry appointed Justice Brister chief justice of the Fourteenth Court of Appeals of Texas in 2001, and was re-elected the next year.[8]
