Shirley W. Kram is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. She joined the court in 1983 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.
Early life and ecuation
Kram graduated from Brooklyn Law with her Bachelor of Laws degree in 1950[1].
Professional career
Kram began her legal career as a Staff Attorney for the Legal Aid Society of New York City from 1951 to 1953 before becoming a private practice in New York City from 1954 to 1960 and returned to the Legal Aid Society as Assistant attorney in Charge of the Harlem Office of the Legal Aide Society from 1962 to 1971 and was the Chief of the Narcotics and Mental Health Division handling these cases for low income clients from 1962 to 1971 before being appointed as Family Court Judge of the New York City Family Court of the Manhattan section from 1971 to 1983[1].
Judicial career
Southern district of New York
On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Al D'Amato, Kram was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on January 31, 1983 to a seat vacated by Lawrence Pierce. Kram was confirmed by the Senate on March 2, 1983 on a senate vote and received commission on March 2, 1983. Kram later assumed senior status on May 23, 1993[1].
