Sidney Stein is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He joined the court in 1995 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. Stein assumed senior status on September 1, 2010.

Early life and education

Born in Passaic, New Jersey, Stein graduated from Princeton University with his bachelor's degree in 1967 and obtained his Juris Doctor, J.D. degree from Yale Law School in 1972. Stein also attended New York University Graduate School of Education.[1]

Stein served in the New York Army National Guard from 1969 to 1975.[1]

Professional career

Stein was a law clerk to former Chief Judge Stanley Fuld in the New York State Court of Appeals from 1972 to 1973. Stein was a private practice attorney in New York City from 1974 to 1995.[1]

Judicial career

Southern district of New York

On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Stein was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York by President Bill Clinton on January 11, 1995 to a seat vacated by Pierre Leval as Leval was appointed to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.Stein was confirmed by the Senate on March 17, 1995 on a majority voice vote and received commission on March 17, 1995.[2] Stein was succeeded in this position by Alison J. Nathan.
