Simeon Acoba

Simeon R. Acoba, Jr. was sworn in as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Hawai`i on May 19, 2000. He was appointed by Governor Ben Cayetano, a Democrat and is one of five justices serving on the Supreme Court. His current term ends on May 18, 2010.[1]

Biography

Justice Acoba graduated from the University of Hawai`i with a bachelor's degree in 1966. He then received his law degree in 1969 from Northwestern University Law School.[1]

Legal career

Justice Acoba began his legal career as a law clerk to the Chief Justice. In 1970, he became the special assistant to President Harlan Cleveland of the University of Hawai`i. He then worked from 1975 to 1977 as special counsel to the Division of Occupational Safety and Health, the Campaign Spending Commission, and the Public Utilities Commission. He was appointed a per diem judge in the District Court of the First Circuit in 1979. The following year, he became a judge on the Circuit Court of the First Circuit, where he served until 1994. On May 26, 1994, he was appointed to the Intermediate Court of Appeals. He then joined the Supreme Court in May of 2000.[1]
